THE STONE HOUSES

Thanks to a $3MM gift from SECU + a $2MM gift from the SECU Foundation, Dix Park Conservancy was able to renovate three historic houses at Dix Park. 

Dix Park Conservancy, the City of Raleigh, SECU & the SECU Foundation broke ground on the Stone Houses on Jan 26th, 2023, and renovations were officially complete in May 2024.

 

Final Update: Welcome to the Stone Houses

After 16 months and a lot of hard work and attention, the Dix Park Stone Houses and site are complete! We’re so excited to welcome park visitors to the site. Read on for the final construction update and see how the site dramatically changed throughout this project.

Superintendent's House

The Superintendent's House was built in 1923 and housed the Dorothea Dix Hospital Superintendent and his family. Today, the Superintendent's House serves as office space for the Dix Park Conservancy.

 

Physician's House

The Physician's House served as living quarters for single, male doctors and was built in the 1920s. Today, it serves as office space for the City of Raleigh and will host the Dix Park Artists in Residence.

 

Gatekeeper's Cottage

The Gatekeeper's Cottage was built in 1923 and housed the Dorothea Dix Hospital Gatekeeper who secured the entrance and exit of the hospital grounds. The Gatekeeper’s Cottage has been transformed into the park’s first-ever Visitor Center.
