A Tribute to Dr. Walter Stelle

Recently, Dix Park Conservancy received an online donation from Courtney Tesch with a tribute to Dr. Walter Stelle included: “Dr. Stelle was the hospital director at Dorothea Dix Hospital when I worked in DDH’s Community Relations Department from 2001-2005. I remember him being a very kind and supportive hospital director to both staff and patients at Dorothea Dix Hospital. I’m pleased I can make a donation to Dix Park Conservancy in his memory.”
Upon learning of Dr. Walter “Terry” Stelle’s passing, we offered our condolences to Caroline Setliff, his daughter, and other family members. Caroline replied, “He was proud of his accomplishments throughout his career but always said that the years he worked at Dix Hospital, at the end of his career, were by far the most fulfilling years he had.” Caroline also recommended we reach out to Faye McArthur with whom her father had worked closely.
“(My dad) always said that the years he worked at Dix Hospital...were by far the most fulfilling years he had.”
Faye McArthur, Community Relations Director during Dr. Stelle’s tenure, remembered Dr. Stelle fondly: “Dr. Stelle was a terrific supervisor. More than that, he was a great friend for eternity. He was very patient-oriented in a time when many Directors were not.”
In Dr. Stelle's obituary, the News & Observer noted: "Terry was personally thanked by Governor Jim Hunt for his work in improving conditions at the hospital for patients. During his years at Dix, he was passionate about ensuring the troubled patients were not mistreated."
Through the donations made in his name, Dr. Stelle continues to have a positive impact on the land that has become Dix Park, a place where Raleigh residents can bolster their mental health and wellness. And Courtney Tesch’s donation has enabled us to re-establish relationships with people who care about Dix Park’s past and future.
The Dix Park Conservancy Legacy Committee will stay in touch with Faye McArthur and others to record more of the history of Dorothea Dix Hospital. We are grateful for the renewed support of Courtney Tesch, Caroline Setliff and Faye McArthur.
